Course Description

From the earliest days of colonization of the “new world,” in what is now the US, our relationships with Spain, England, France, Portugal, and Russia have been complicated, moving back and forth from enemies to friends as borders, alliances, and economics dominated the political scene. Explore our multi-dimensional origins.

Week 1: Our Spanish Origins, Opposition, and Opportunities in Colonial Days and Emerging Republic

Week 2: “Immigrant” Founding Fathers: Meet founders born outside the colonies and how they created and shaped the new republic

Week 3: France: Frequent Foe, Friend, and Financier

Week 4: The Louisiana Purchase: Secret Agendas, Politics, and Legal Questions

Week 5: The Marquis de Lafayette: Washington’s Favorite Son Saved the Republic and the Republic Saved Him

Week 6: How did our early leaders juggle the complicated, confusing, and contradictory relationship with other nations?
