Legal English & Skills Program

The Legal English and Skills Program is uniquely designed for students looking to improve their legal English language and lawyering skills

Participants in this two-week (ten days) experiential learning program will:

  • Improve their legal English speaking and writing proficiency.
  • Build a foundation of basic US legal skills.
  • Gain an understanding of US legal education and the law school experience.

The program provides an opportunity to meet other law students and practitioners from around the world and includes professional networking and social events, and visits within the Miami legal community.

Who may participate?

Participants in the course must be law students or recent law graduates in their home countries. In addition, they must have an intermediate to advanced level of English.

What topics will be covered?

Each week will focus on a specific skill and will include a legal skills unit, legal English classes, and two legal topics lectures designed to expose students to the study of different areas of law in the US. Fridays and some of the afternoons and evenings will be used to schedule professional networking and social events.

Activities may include a visit to the courthouse and meeting with a judge, a visit to a government agency, a visit to a local art museum, attending a major league baseball game and/or an on or off-campus networking reception.

Week One: Students will be introduced to Reading and Understanding Case Law, and will develop their reading and writing skills.

Week Two: Students will focus on Negotiating to Resolve a Dispute, and refine oral communication skills. Lectures may cover areas of interest to international students, such as international arbitration, cross-border taxation, transactional skills, or entertainment law.

This program takes place at the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus, within the UM School of Law.

What is the program cost?

The program fee is $2,500. This includes all course materials, light breakfast, lunch, any ticket or entrance fees for off-site activities, and transportation to designated events as determined.

What is the housing situation?

Miami Law has secured a limited number of single and double-occupancy rooms on the University of Miami campus that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at a significantly reduced nightly rate. For your planning purposes, room types and current rates are as follows:

  • Double Shared Room - $35.00 USD/night per person (has a shared bathroom with connecting suite)
  • Double Room (not shared) - $52.00 USD/night (has a shared bathroom with connecting suite)
  • Private Single Room - $59.00 USD/night (has a private bathroom)

(A link and steps for reserving housing will be provided to participants upon enrollment in the program, at which time your room preference, dates, pairings, etc. can be finalized.)

If you would prefer to stay off-campus, there are a number of hotels nearby that will honor the University of Miami’s discounted, negotiated rate. A list of these hotels and their rates will be provided in your welcome email. Additionally, there are many comfortable and affordable options for individual or shared lodging through Airbnb, VRBO, etc. that participants are welcome to pursue.
