Course Description

In this class, we will explore the stylistic evolution of Beethoven from his arrival in Vienna in 1792 (age 22) until his historic concert on 22 December,1808. Beethoven’s musical characteristics (both traditional and innovative) will be demonstrated in videos of select compositions for piano, violin, chamber & early orchestral works.

Week 1: Beethoven’s formative years in Bonn; his rising reputation as piano virtuoso in Vienna. Early well-known piano works (e.g., “Pathétique” and “Moonlight” sonatas).

Week 2: Excerpts from Beethoven’s early symphonies, string quartets, and Piano Concerto no. 3.

Week 3: The Heiligenstadt Testament (1802): From suicidal crisis to the ground-breaking Eroica Symphony (1803).

Week 4: Beethoven and the violin: the “Kreutzer” Sonata, Rasumovsky String Quartets, and the Violin Concerto.

Week 5: Beethoven’s historic Vienna Christmas concert (22.12.1808). The Pastoral Symphony. Introduction to the Fifth Symphony.

Week 6: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (cont.): its structural milestone and turning point in Western music aesthetics.
