Course Description

This class is mostly a workshop, along with writing prompts each class. Here you can explore your own voice as a writer, describe compelling settings, and develop your ability to tell a good story. We discuss the nuts and bolts of fiction and memoir and are mostly hands-on. If you want to jot those ideas down but don’t know where to start, this is a friendly atmosphere. Or perhaps you already write but want to up your game. We offer helpful exercises and feedback in a friendly setting.

Week 1: Setting: Discussion, writing prompts, and examples of a powerful setting.

Week 2: Character: Discussion, writing prompts, and examples of excellent character development.

Week 3: Plot for Fiction: discussion, writing prompts, and examples of well-developed plots.

Week 4: Structure for Non-fiction/Memoir: how to organize a memoir with movement and direction.

Week 5: Tone and Theme: Examples of well-used tone and themes are written about and discussed.

Week 6: Review of all classes.

Required Text: Creative Writer’s Handbook (3RD Edition) by Jason and Lefcowitz. The text is available online as a used book for under $4. Note: the recent 5th Edition, costs around $90 (not for us!) and differs little from the 3rd Edition, which is the one to buy.
