Course Description: The history of the Mediterranean Sea encompasses the history of communications between people and cultures from the surrounding lands through trade, diplomacy, colonization, and war. Some of the most ancient human civilizations, such as the Egyptian, Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Persian, and Arab, were organized around it. The history and development of cultures around the Mediterranean basin are key to understanding the development of Western science and culture today.

Week 3    The Roman Empire and the ‘Mare Nostrum.’
Week 4    The fall of the Roman Empire.
Week 5    The Islamic conquest of the Mediterranean.
Week 6    The Mediterranean in the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
