Course Description

Encaustics is a mixed media art technique practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. It involves using a heated beeswax medium which is applied to a surface. Then other materials such as paint, ground pigments and oil pastels are incorporated upon and within the wax. In each class, students build up their own encaustic painting as they learn and work with a different technique. We will also incorporate collage and a personal photograph within the painting.

Note: No painting experience is needed to learn and enjoy encaustics. Students will have completed 1 photo encaustic artwork at the end of the course.  The materials list will be forwarded upon registration.  Returning beginning Photo Encaustic artists are welcome.

Week 1:    Lecture and Power Point presentation on the history, materials and techniques of encaustics.
Week 2:    Demo and getting started: We will begin to build the base layer of our encaustic painting with mark making writing, collage, stencils and encaustic gesso. Discussion regarding the best types of photographs to incorporate into the encaustic piece.
Week 3:    Demo and studio time: Laying down the initial smooth wax layers, fusing of the layers, application of encaustic paint, it's opacity and creating translucency.
Week 4:    Demo and studio time: Embedding the photo into the encaustic piece. Students will work with their own photos.
