Did That Really Happen? Memoir & Life Stories (Continue the Journey)

Course Description: In this class, the student will be guided through writing snippets, essays, or chapters of their lives for themselves and others to enjoy. It continues the journey of memoir. It is not necessary to have taken the first class.  It is for: Those recalling life stories to share with grandchildren and others; Those who want to write a personal memoir around a certain period or topic in their lives, and Those who enjoy reading snippets of popular memoirs as inspiration and want to learn a few literary tools (writing about your home, characters in your family and elsewhere) along the way. Literary discussion from the text will take up a small part of the class.

Week 1:  How to write about places you have lived. Describing scenes from your past and present. Developing a voice and a style.

Week 2:  Writing about living people. How to be fair (or not!). How to bring vivid “characters and loved ones to light. What is our responsibility to those we love? Factual vs. emotional truth.

Week 3: How to handle time in memoir. What part of your life should you write about? All of it? Part of it? What tense to tell your story in. How to choose a detail. Why internal struggles can be just as compelling as “rock-em-sockem” stories.

Week 4: How to tell the story. Organizing our ideas into a cohesive piece(s).

Week 5: Why other’s memoirs amuse us and techniques we can use to do the same.

Week 6: Summarizing your journey.

Instructor: Ms. Jeannie DeQuine
