Course Description

Four 19th Century Operas, Four Distinct Experiences

Course Description: Four well-known operas were selected for the purpose of projecting the highly divergent approaches to the genre during the 19th century. The unique dramatic-musical features of each opera (including the treatment of its literary sources) will be discussed in detail. The four operas will be presented in DVD performances.

Week 1:  Bellini’s Norma (Milan, 1831): the 19th-century model of the tragic bel canto opera, as a romanticized version of classical Greek & Roman sources.

Week 2:  Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld (Paris, 1858): the comic opera as a mockery of the French veneration of classical Greek sources.

Week 3:  Verdi’s Don Carlo (Paris,1867): the tragic “grand” opera; a fictionalized historical exposure of imperial Spain and its Inquisition.

Week 4:  Verdi’s Don Carlo (cont.).

Week 5:  J. Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus  (Vienna, 1874): the “grand” operetta; a brilliant political satire of contemporary imperial Vienna.

Week 6:  Die Fledermaus  (cont.).

Instructor: Dr. Judith Etzion
