Course Description

Love & Marriage in the Movies

Although the ideal for both love and marriage is to live happily ever after, this is rarely the case in either cinema or real life. Throughout cinema history, beginning with silent films, we see the ideal of a happy love affair and marriage thwarted by the realities that interfere with this desirable outcome. This class will look at the history of love and marriage in movies from early silent films to the present day. Many of the films we consider will be a product of the time in which they were made. The problems faced by the couples reflect the political, social and economic issues of the day. The class will also consider specific problems in marriages and the films that illustrate those issues.

Note:  Students will rent films from Amazon ($1.99-5.99) and view them prior to class.
