Course Description

In this course, we will explore the material, artistic, and intellectual legacy of Arab-Islamic civilization from its origins in the 7th century to its enduring global impact. Divided into two parts, we will examine how archaeology uncovers the cities, monuments, and material culture of the Islamic world; how art and architecture expressed faith, power, and creativity; and how science and innovation shaped knowledge across the medieval world and beyond.  Participants will study iconic sites such as Damascus, Cordoba, and Baghdad; analyze masterpieces of Islamic art and calligraphy; and trace scientific breakthroughs in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and engineering. Together, these dimensions reveal the Arab-Islamic world as a cradle of cultural and scientific achievements that continue to shape the modern world.
