Course Description

Vision is the primary means by which we perceive and interact with what surrounds us. We use visual symbols and metaphorical visual language. Vision permeates our life. The act of seeing is so natural to us that we do not fully appreciate its complexity. Light reflected by the environment in front of us enters our eyes and through intricate neural pathways reaches both consciously and unconsciously our brain, generating a representation of the outside world and guiding our behavior. Our brain may independently generate images and choose what to see. This course is a journey in the realm of vision, walking together with the light and neural signals and stopping here and there to discuss what buzzes in our visual system and the meaning of it, also including history, art, and philosophy.

Week 1:The window of vision — what the eye can see.

Week 2: The eye/brain connection— scenic and overlooked roads of the visual pathway.

Week 3: Top-down vision — the brain chooses what it is worth seeing.

Week 4: Imagining images — reality is not what it seems.

Week 5: Eloquence of visual neurons — how visual neurons talk with each other.

Week 6: The wonder of color vision — how light is converted in color perception.
