Course Description

Everyone knows George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and other well-known U.S. founders. Who else shaped our republic in significant ways but are rarely mentioned in our history classes? Remember, celebrate, and appreciate these remarkable people who still affect our daily lives.

Week 1:   Robert Morris: Financier of the Revolution. He saved the Continental Army with his personal credit and supplies and laid the groundwork for our financial system but ended up in debtor’s prison.
Week 2:   James Wilson: Drafter of the U.S. Constitution lost to scandal: Wilson inspired the most important words in the Declaration of Independence, wrote the critical first draft of the Constitution, believed the people should elect the president directly, and was lost from history when he died in a tavern hiding from creditors.
Week 3:   Gouverneur Morris: “Penman of the Constitution.” Morris wrote the inspirational U.S. Constitution Preamble, favored a strong central government, and served as Minister to France during their Revolution when his wooden leg saved him from the mob.
Week 4:   Native American Heritage: Traditions, Tragedies, Trail of Tears. Native Americans were in the U.S. 30,000 years before the European invaders. Some colonists developed partnerships; Some destroyed through disease or war. Ben Franklin pushed their organizational practices; Andrew Jackson drove them from their ancestral homes.
Week 5:  Jewish Revolutionaries and Founding Fathers. The earliest Jewish immigrants settled in port cities from Charleston to New York, and became merchants, revolutionary militiamen and financiers. Washington advocated for their freedom of religion and civic equality.
Week 6:  Black History is American History Revolution, “Railroad,” Revelation: Blacks fought on both sides in the Revolution, served with honor in the army and later the navy; fought to end slavery in the north and south; and influenced presidents, leaving a rich U.S. heritage as the fight continues for full equality.
