Course Description

In this course, we will explore how filmmakers have used New York City as a setting, character, and cultural symbol. We will analyze films across genres and decades, examining themes such as immigration, identity, urban change, crime, aspiration, and the mythologizing of NYC. The class combines film screenings, discussion and historical context.


Week 1:    Introduction to New York on Film.
Week 2:    The Immigrant City.
Week 3:    Classic Hollywood’s New York.
Week 4:    The City in Crisis: 1970s New York.
Week 5:    Independent Voices and Lower Manhattan.
Week 6:    Romance and the Mythic Manhattan.
