PLG 619 - Real Estate Law Specialist
Course Description
The University of Miami has expanded paralegal program offerings, with emphasis on skill building and advanced application-based learning in specific areas of law. Each Paralegal Concentration utilizes textbooks and resources associated with an area of law, structured in incremental learning, centered on key concepts, rights, remedies, legal trends, procedure, research, and writing. The Real Estate Law Specialist Paralegal Concentration Certificate allow paralegals to reinforce current skills and build higher level skills in this specific area of law that is in high demand for paralegal careers.
All Program Instructors are licensed attorneys with professional experience in the field of instruction. Each student is assigned an instructor who works one-to-one with them throughout the Program, providing guidance and substantive feedback. The Program structure consists of application-based, practice-specific research and document drafting assignments, practice quizzes, curated articles specific to the area of study, professionally narrated e-Lectures, and other state-of-the-art online study tools and e-Workshops.
UM's Paralegal Concentration Certificate Programs are offered in the following areas: Immigration Law, Litigation, Contract Law, Wills, Trusts, Estates, and Probate Law, Real Estate Law, Business Law, Intellectual Property Law, Entertainment Law, and Criminal Law.
Course Outline
- Client contact, investigations
- Drafting motions and pleading
- Preparing filing packets
- Compiling and responding to discovery requests
- Organizing trial notebooks
- Researching law, preparing briefs
- Assisting in alternative dispute resolution and litigation
Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program the participant will demonstrate proficiency in:
- Distinguishing commercial and residential real estate transactions
- Analyzing rights, obligations, and restrictions associated with real estate ownership
- Evaluating real estate use options and limitations
- Describing real estate disputes
- Tracing liens and encumbrances
- Exploring landlord and tenant rights and obligations
- Laying out the closing process
- Conducting advanced legal research in real estate law
- Demonstrating advanced legal writing drafting skills in real estate law.
Notes
Program is offered in a Self-Paced modality, as it allows learners to study on their own time throughout the week. However, the Program has a defined start and end date, with no option to extend completion beyond its published end date. In addition, to ensure learners are able to complete the Program within its published time frame, there are specified deadlines and due dates for assignment and assessments (exams) submissions (no extensions may be granted).

All students have a Handshake account that is automatically created for them once they begin their program of study at the U. Once you receive an email notification, all you have to do is log into Handshake to activate your account. Handshake will then recommend certain positions to you based on your profile allowing for easy searching. Comparing and updating your profile will provide Handshake with a better idea of which job interviews/internships listings you may be interested in.
