Course Description

Caravagio: Between Chiaro & Scuro

Course Description (3-5 sentences describing the course):
This course introduces Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio (1573-1610), alias Caravaggio, one of the most revolutionary Italian painters, his works, and the impact of his painting style to the development of Western art. Caravaggio combined observation and a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, making his technique a well recognizable stylistic cypher. He worked rapidly with live models and his influence can be seen in many future generations of painters. Indeed, not only Caravaggio’s innovations inspired Baroque painting, but his importance has been crucial to the development of Western art.
